Da un balcone, o meglio tre, di una grangia costruita a partire dal Settecento sul lato solatio della media Val di Viù, nelle Alpi Graie torinesi. Preziosi metri quadrati di vetuste tavole di castagno per affacciarsi a un mondo di balze rocciose e minuscoli spazi pianeggianti, sorretti da muri a secco e un tempo coltivati a segale o destinati a pascolo per le capre, oggi dominio della foresta. Un luogo remoto a novecentoventi metri di altezza dove il silenzio quotidiano è interrotto dalla risata beffarda del picchio e accompagnato dalla voce della fontana che dà il nome alla minuscola frazione in cui l’autore ha scelto di vivere tra un viaggio e l’altro. A Fontanetta il suo viaggio continua da fermo, contemplando e fotografando le piccole cose e i sorprendenti colpi di scena della natura che lo abbraccia e lo sostiene. Se è vero che Viù sta per via, poiché i Romani utilizzavano i passi dell’alta valle per raggiungere la Gallia, anche un piccolo balcone diventa la via per conoscere, amare e raccontare la nostra terra.

Two hundred and forty-eight photos taken over a decade from the very same place. From the balcony, or rather three balconies, of a grange built in the eighteenth century, on the sunny side of the middle of the valley of Val di Viù, in the Graian Alps of Turin, Italy. A few precious square metres of ancient chestnut boards for looking out over a world of rocky crags and tiny terraces, supported by dry stone walls, and once cultivated with rye, or dedicated to the pasture of goats, but, today, left to the dominion of the forest. A remote place, nine hundred and twenty metres above sea level, where the daily silence is interrupted by the mocking laughter of a woodpecker, accompanied by the voice of the fountain that gives its name to the tiny hamlet of Fontanetta, in which the author has chosen to live, between one trip and the next. In Fontanetta, his journey continues at a standstill, by contemplating and photographing the little things, and the surprising twists of nature that embraces and sustains him. As it may be true that the name of the valley, ‘Viù’, means ‘way’, since the Romans used the passes of the upper valley to reach Gaul, then perhaps even the smallest balcony can become a way to know, love and speak of our land.

“Per una decina d’anni ho fotografato gli eventi della terra e dell’aria, compiendo forse il più straordinario dei viaggi: quello senza muoversi da casa, dell’osservazione, della curiosità, dell’ozio disimparato, cercando il dio delle piccole cose, capace di rendere eterni gli istanti. Diversi anni prima che arrivasse la pandemia praticavo già questi esercizi nei metri quadrati dei terrazzi di casa, alternandoli ai viaggi a piedi in Italia e in Europa” (Riccardo Carnovalini).

For about ten years now, I have photographed the events of the earth and the air, making perhaps the most extraordinary of journeys, that made without moving from home but deriving from observation, curiosity, unlearned idleness, looking for the god of small things, that which is capable of making moments eternal. Several years before the pandemic arrived, I had already been practising these exercises in the few square metres of the terraces of my house, alternating them with trips on foot in Italy and in Europe.

Riccardo Carnovalini (1957) cammina e fotografa l’Italia e l’Europa da quarant’anni, raccontandone bellezza e contraddizioni. Ha pubblicato una ventina di libri e centinaia di reportage su riviste di viaggio e natura, da «Atlante» ad «Airone», a «Epoca». È stato fotografo del «Touring Club Italiano» e dell’«Istituto Geografico De Agostini»; è autore dell’agenzia internazionale «Getty Images». Specializzato nel paesaggio italiano, il suo archivio ha mezzo milione di foto, molte in pellicola di medio formato. Tra i viaggi a piedi: due volte l’Appennino e tre volte le Alpi da un capo all’altro; quattromila chilometri sulle coste da Trieste a Ventimiglia; il periplo di Sardegna e Sicilia; il Camminaitalia, otto mesi sulle montagne per promuovere il Sentiero Italia; PasParTu, seimila chilometri senza meta nell’Italia che si fida; l’Appia antica da Roma a Brindisi. Riccardo Carnovalini (1957) has been walking and photographing Italy and Europe for forty years, telling us about its beauty and contradictions. He has published about twenty books and hundreds of pieces in travel and nature magazines, from «Atlante» to «Airone», to «Epoca». He was a photographer of «Touring Club Italiano» and of «De Agostini Istituto Geografico», and works with the international agency «Getty Images». Specialized in the Italian landscape, his archive has half a million photos, many in medium format film. His journeys on foot include: twice the Apennines and three times the Alps from one end to the other; four thousand kilometers on the coasts from Trieste to Ventimiglia; the circumnavigation of Sardinia and Sicily; the Camminaitalia, eight months in the mountains to promote the Sentiero Italia project; PasParTu, six thousand aimless kilometers around the trusting side of Italy; the Appia antica from Rome to Brindisi; Europe from Trieste to Denmark upon the fall of the Berlin Wall; the TransAlpedes from Vienna to Nice; the Occitania a pè from the Alps to the Pyrenees; all of Scandinavia to Nordkinn.
